Physical Description | Despite the physical limitations that Renn Aamas has, he keeps himself in excellent physical shape. His upper body is toned, but strong. Though his legs are useless, the muscle over the years has withered and atrophied, but he keeps conditioned with the help of a physical therapist. His hair is auburn that he keeps trimmed within regulation, buzzed on the sides, longer on top so he can style. He likes to keep things simple, so rarely does he grow his hair out past a certain point. As with all his race, his eye color is black. He possesses a strong jaw, that typically has a day or two worth of stubble. Again, he likes to keep things simple, so he forgoes the act of shaving on occasion. Depending on his mood, he sometimes sports a full beard and other times he is clean-shaven. When not in uniform – which is tailored to fit his form precisely – he leans toward the casual. He most times opts for joggers with just a t-shirt. If the occasion arises, he needs to be social outside of his working hours, he will either wear jeans or khakis with a polo shirt or a button-down shirt. Due to his paraplegia, Renn must use a wheelchair to get around. Instead of using a hoverchair, he prefers to use a manual chair. The frame is made of a light duranium polymer, the two small wheels in the front are made of a more durable alloy, and the rubber is specialized to withstand most climate changes and terrain. The two large wheels in the back are made of the same alloys and rubber as the two front wheels. The chair is easily portable and has yet to interfere with duties. Renn has a tattoo sleeve on both arms, and tattoos that cover his torso. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Many will say that circumstance will not only shape who you are but will shape your future as well. One can either accept that, or let it squash you. Renn Aamas was one to accept this fate, though quite grudgingly at first. Once he was a man who from early childhood was in turmoil, to a man who was finally in control of his life.. He sometimes was quick with a hurtful smile, or slouched to his shoulders, but he tried his best be the type of Betazoid was always meant to be warm, compassionate and open to all. Despite losing his mother at a young age, he always considered his life to be okay in that his parents helped him cope. His family was wealthy, and he had everything he could possibly want. Life, to Renn, was good. Instead of joining Starfleet, which so many of his friends had done, Renn decided to go the university route. At a young age he had shown a gift for languages and the technical side of communications. He knew he wanted to pursue this gift, but he also knew he didn’t want to just sit around all day in a stuffy office decoding ancient texts. This aptitude for languages had given him a bit of an arrogant personality, he knew he was good, and he dared anyone to say otherwise. That all changed for him in late 2382 when an accident occurred that left him without the use of his legs. The road to recovery was a tough one, but he was determined to get better. Once he was fit to return to work, his demeanor changed dramatically. He no longer was carefree, and that quick smile was no more. He closed himself off, became hardened, and less open to those around him. He never wanted help, and he felt like he constantly had something to prove. No longer was the Renn who was arrogant, open, and ambitious, instead he was replaced with a man who became serious and closed off. Over the years since his accident, his old demeanor has returned. However, he can still find himself closed off, and his strict, no-nonsense nature has tended to stick. Except for now, he finds himself once again sporting a smile and life is something to once again enjoy. |

Strengths & Weaknesses | A lot of Renn’s strengths come from not only his intelligence but from his perseverance. He could have quit life a long time ago, but his determination kept him going. In a way, the accident that changed his life made him humbler, and it certainly made him a more flawed humanoid. His largest strength is the fact he is a prodigy when it came to languages. This was noticed at an early age when he began to speak his native language at the age of two, and he picked up Federation Standard by the time he was four years old. By the time he was ten, he could speak twenty different Federation and non-Federation languages fluently. He also had learned multiple forms of sign language, pictogram-based languages, as well as all the old dialects of the Betazoid language. He is intelligent in this regard, and with the learning of languages came exposure to culture, history, food, etc. So, he has a rich knowledge of all that he has learned over the years. Currently, he is at several dozen languages that he can pick up and speak fluently. There are also several languages that he speaks less fluently, but has a basic knowledge of syntax, phonemes, morphemes, and lexemes of those languages. Another strength is his own heritage, which being Betazoid means he has telepathic and empathic abilities. This makes him incredibly open-minded, and at times can give him the upper hand if needed. With that said, this is also considered one of his weaknesses. His mind has a hard time with all the voices, and he doesn’t always keep tight control over filtering everything out. Some medical doctors such as neurologists and psychiatrists have deemed this a byproduct of his intelligence and his brain being wired differently than most Betazoids. It has taken several years of counseling as well as his accident to learn to close himself off. However, he does not always maintain control which can lead to anxiety and panic attacks. For the most part, with the techniques he has learned, he can keep everything coming at him at once. Renn is also very organized and at times quite serious (sometimes to serious). Before his accident he was a carefree individual who took a lot of risks, and his chaotic brain didn’t really work well with organization – instead he considered it organized chaos. After his accident, however, he knew with life changing, so did the way he lived. He took his work more seriously, his studies more seriously and a once organized chaos became strictly organized. With this switch in attitude, it helped him gain his confidence and strength back after his accident. Instead of laying down and giving up, he chose to live. Renn’s weaknesses come in many forms, some were there before his accident and some came post-accident. Pre accident he tended to be an arrogant individual, he knew he was smart and would let people know it. Though he stayed on track with his studies, he was a party boy, slept around, drank too much, and in general just sometimes was just a horrible humanoid. He certainly was not always easy to get along with. Sometimes he was super friendly, and other times super moody and angry. He had a hard time reeling in his emotions, and this was found due to his brain not working like others. Post accident everything changed, including his personality. Gone was the arrogance and fun loving Renn Aamas, but what was left was someone closed off and angry. He lashed out and everything and everyone, his depression was at an all-time low and there were weeks he didn’t want to do much which included eating, physical therapy, reading, studying, or anything else. His leave of absence from his research and university work had deepened that depression even further. On the flip side of this, once he started to live again, his closed off nature began to dissipate, yet it is still there and he isn’t always in a hurry to make friends or even get into relationships. When he isn’t collaborating, or traveling for his work, he enjoys his alone time where he can be out of his chair, calm the noises in his head and push away external stimuli. Renn does have a habit, at times, of pushing people away, especially those that want to get close to him. The very first time this happened was when his mother had died. The grief he experienced was all consuming and he wasn’t keen on letting people in to help him. He suffered alone. Eventually the pain eased and his grief became more manageable. Then his accident happened and he was back to the time his mother had died. He suffered alone, even pushing away his family, but again with time passing, he has learned to live with his grief and is more likely to welcome people into his life. Overall, Renn Aamas just tries to live his life the best way he knows how. He knows he isn’t perfect, and certainly his life experiences have shaped him into the man he is today. His strengths and weaknesses make him who he is, and he won’t apologize for that. |

Ambitions | At one point, a long time ago, Renn was quite a determined young man. He entered the academic world wanting to rise in the ranks of academia. Once his accident happened and his fate was directed down a different path, ambition went out the window. He was determined to prove his worth, he got all his degrees, though there had been setbacks. All that mattered was to get out into space and continue to research, and to stay focused, determined, and serve the academia of language and communications with distinction and honor. There is this small part of him that hopes to achieve a well-known linguistic experience in the Federation, but now he is perfectly content with where he is at in his career, especially since he knew he could have lost it all. | |
Hobbies & Interests | As with most humanoids, hobbies and interests change, as one gets older and wiser. What was an interest a decade ago may not be so much in the present day. Typically, Renn’s hobbies and interest take a back seat to his job. His love of language and culture never waned and that has stayed a strong component of his life. Before his accident, he was into anything and everything. He was curious and hungry to learn all that he could about others who were not part of his own race. Nowadays, he isn’t interested in such things and prefers to either read a book or go to the holodeck. Another more recent interest he has taken up is creative writing. He started with jotting down some thoughts in a journal, and now has written several poems and short stories since then. Other interests include working out, playing basketball, and swimming. |
Personal History | Born: November 1, 2356 (Earth Calendar), The 1st full moon of Trax (Betazoid Calendar) Place of Birth: Costal city of Iscandar on the continent of Therazad, Betazed. Born into an aristocratic family, Renn Aamas never wanted for anything. As far back as he can remember, he had always lived in opulence. The Aamas children always had the best toys, went to the best schools, and had the best clothes. Despite the wealth, their politician father believed that it was important to stay humble, that as a politician’s family it was important for the children to treat all others with dignity and respect. Despite what his father stated, Renn very much enjoyed the opulence his father’s position had afforded, so many times he wasn’t humbled about it at all. In fact, later in life, after his accident had happened, he had wondered if he wasn’t being punished due to his pretentiousness toward others. From being a toddler to childhood, Renn showed an interest and aptitude for languages. By the time he was two years old, he was already talking in full sentences, reading, and even doing some writing. It was found that Renn’s brain had developed differently from others of his race. He was considered a prodigy, but with that came a setback of dealing with his telepathic and empathic abilities sooner than he should have had to. Instead of institutionalizing him, his parents decided to keep Renn home. Due to their wealth and status his parents were able to help their young child cope. It wasn’t always easy dealing with Renn, but to this day he is grateful his parents didn’t lock him away and forget about him. His parents nurtured and supported him and allowed him to continue his studies all while seeking the help of off-world neurologists and psychologists to help their son cope with all the voices and emotions that were hitting him. Three weeks after Renn turned fifteen, the most horrific thing that could ever happen to a child happened, the loss of his mother. Renn’s mother was on a diplomatic mission to the world of Sendar IV as a third party to help negotiate the release of hostages from a colony ship. During an afternoon session, a renegade group of Sendarians burst into the room where the negotiations took place and assassinated all the delegations that were present. Afterwards, all fifty men, women, and children of the colony ship were assassinated as well. A coup started that very day. However, it took almost three days for the news to reach the Aamas family. Annella Aamas’ body was never recovered. Rennan fell into a dark place of despair; he imagined his mother’s last moments over and over in his head. As he imagined them, he felt like he was being gunned down as well. It was a horrible feeling; it led to sadness, to rage, then back to sadness. As a race, the Betazoids all felt the death of one of their most highly regarded diplomats. It was so senseless and it took the Aamas family a very long time to recover, even though their grief still stays with each one of them, it is now manageable. For Renn, however, the murder of his mother has imprinted on his complex brain, and he still lives it out, mostly in nightmares. When he was of age, barely able to remain on his home world, Renn opted to not pursue his education on Betazed, but instead applied and was accepted into the language program at the Institute of Language and Communication in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Earth. It would be the first time he ventured to the home of humanity and the planet where the Federation Treaty had been signed more than two centuries earlier. During his four years on Earth, he traveled across the globe, immersing himself in all languages, culture, religious practices and food. Earth was so diverse, way more diverse than his own planet. Betazoids were just different he supposed, there was nothing secret on Betazed, so diversity wasn’t a thing. He had met humans and many other species in his time, but it was always on his father and mother’s turf. While in Argentina, he entered his very first romantic relationship, which happened to be a human. The two connected both on a intellectual and intimate level. For the first time, Renn found himself in love. He found his person, but after three years, the relationship fell apart. He was not prepared for the emotional fallout of that, and so struggled but managed to get through. He found out from friends that first loves were always the toughest to get past. He wasn’t quite sure of that, especially considering he almost said Imazdi, the word Betazoids used when there was true love and connection. Renn moved on and entered New York University to start another long tenure of education. Here he planned to complete his master’s degree and doctorate. Just like in Buenos Aires, New York City had a pulse to it. Not only was it massive, but it was diverse. So much of the world had converged on this American city for centuries, and now it wasn’t just humans who came but aliens from all over the Federation. He wondered why Paris was the seat of the Federation President was in Paris and not in New York. To him, New York was far better of a place and a more worthwhile place for a galaxy wide government. He settled in just fine, made friends quickly, but there were times he missed home, his family, yet squashed those feelings deep down. He never contacted anyone back on Betazed, including his family. In 2382, toward the end of his tenure as a grad student, Renn was in a serious accident that left him with paraplegia. During a research expedition for his thesis, he and five others ventured to the planet Ansor, a class-M planet with a rock terrain. The Ansorians, a non-Federation planet had an interesting way of communicating, using pictographs and the use of communication through hand gestures. The Ansorians evolved to have no sort of vocal cords to communicate, so over the course of their evolution, their way of communication evolved as well. From simple pictures to a wide, varied, and complex system of pictures and gestures. On one of his off days, Renn and three others went off into the Plarian Mountains on an all-terrain vehicle. If asked today, Renn would say they were young and stupid to even attempt such a thing. But thinking they were young and invincible, they went off, being reckless. Due to this recklessness, the vehicle and the four friends found themselves at the bottom of a ravine. It was twelve hours before they were found. Two of his friends died, Renn felt them die. His own injuries were bad, which included internal bleeding as well as a concussion. He lived, but the scars were physical and emotional. His lower thoracic spine was a wreck and due to the time before he was saved, and the rudimentary medical facilities on their runabout, Renn’s spine from T-11 down was a lost cause. For the next year, he went through many surgeries and physical therapies. Initially he lost all use of his legs, his bladder, bowel, and his sexual organs. With surgery he was able to gain partial function back in his bladder and bowel. Once his rehabilitation was complete, he returned to NYU to finish up his doctoral program, submitted his thesis for review and was granted his Ph.D. Following the completion of his formal education, he took on a one year internship at Starfleet, specifically within the language and communications core. There he worked with cadets, as well as learning Starfleet protocol when it came to languages, the operations of communications (the technical aspect), he also took interest in first contact procedures. Following his one year, Starfleet was willing to give him a commission and a teaching position, but he turned it down. Following his stint at Starfleet, he was off to the Language Research Lab in the symbiont sciences on the Trill homeworld. He knew some about the symbionts and how the process worked when put into a host. The symbiont is given a voice through their new host. Yet, the symbionts communicated when in their natural habitat through electrical impulses through the milky white water they inhabit. This was an honor and a once in a lifetime event for Renn. Most aliens were never allowed to visit these pools. He was allowed to study these electrical impulses and even learn the process in joining. The electrical impulses were difficult to translate, but he was able to recognize patterns. Renn felt that by the time of his tenure on Trill, he felt accomplished even it wasn’t fully what he was hoping. Following his time on Trill, Starfleet came calling. They were offering him a two-year mission on the USS LaMarr that would take him into the Beta Quadrant. Again, he was offered a commission but declined and took just a crewman position. He didn’t need rank, he just wanted the opportunity to get into the Beta Quadrant, especially on a state-of-the-art Starfleet vessel. The two years came with its ups and downs, but overall, the experience was worth it. The LaMarr made first contact with a total of twenty-three new alien species, eighteen of those were friendly, the others not so much. On one away mission, Renn was mugged and had his wheelchair stolen, it was never recovered. Luckily, the chief engineer built him a new one, and was on the go the very same day. Following the incident, he and the chief engineer’s friendship developed into a relationship. Which continued the rest of the mission of the LaMarr. The LaMarr had experienced a few battles, some were minor skirmishes, but some were full blown smackdowns. There were times when Renn was certain the ship was going to be torn to pieces. However, the experienced crew saw them come away from each battle. Sometimes the damage was extensive, other times not so much. The good news was that no one had died, and by the time they concluded their two-year mission, everyone was a bit weary but intact. He shed his Starfleet union and returned to civilian life. After a six-week break, Renn was out in space again, this time as a freelancer. He traveled to many planets in the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant. There were ancient texts found on Bajor he helped translate, then on Dow Five, he helped communicate with a sub species to help them gain rights with the majority of the Dowians. On Cardassian, he worked with a delegation of linguists who welcomed a race called the Felisyn Del. He sometimes was back on Earth, sometimes on Jupiter, over to Trill, then on to Vulcan, and from there somewhere else. He even did a small stint in the Gamma Quadrant. His knowledge base grew, and though not every mission was a success, he felt he learned a lot. Not everything went great, once him and his team from Trill were stuck on the ice planet Hoth. Another time the passenger cargo vessel he was traveling in hit an ion storm and they were stranded for two weeks. Limited power, and limited food did not suit him, but he made the best of the time they were stranded. After almost six years hopping around the quadrant, he returned home to Betazed for a much-needed break. He hadn’t been home since he left all those years ago. He had seen his father and his siblings since then, but either on Earth or met up on a space station somewhere. He had to admit, it was nice to be home, to be back in the home he grew up in. Not much had changed since he had left, and he assumed his father didn’t want to undo all the work his mother had done to decorate the house. He spent a few weeks on Betazed, getting to hang out with old friends, some who had become teachers, doctors, lawyers, and some even joined Starfleet and carried upper ranks by this point. Some were surprised of him being in a wheelchair, some not. Nevertheless, it was like old times, and he was hard pressed to leave. He could easily find a job on Betazed, there were plenty of universities on the planet that would want him. Though that life seemed nice, he waited for a sign to stay and it never came. Instead, the sign came from Starfleet once again asking him to return to the fleet. This time, he would be sent out to Subspace Relay Station-97, a far-off place that sat near the Ionite Nebula. He knew the area and there were several star systems there that he had yet to ever reach. It meant he would be near Breen Space, which was on his bucket list to figure out. He gladly accepted. As requested, he took the lowest rank which was crewman. He donned the science teal Starfleet uniform once again and he was off. A new adventure awaited and he couldn’t wait. Crewman Renn Aamas resides on Subspace Relay Station-97 also knows as Bellwether Station. |
